After returning, she graduated from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and now lives on North Padre Island. Her art reflects the beauty and laid back lifestyle the South Texas coast offers. Subjects include fish and local sea life, beach scenes, South Texas and Mexican wildlife, street scenes, seascapes, landscapes and architecture.
Melissa and John Maupin
In 2001, Melissa established Texas Fish Prints & Coastal Art to celebrate the beauty of the fish she and her husband, John, caught in local waters. Using acrylics, she paints directly on the fish striving to match their colors and then prints the fish on high-quality fabrics. The goal is to reproduce a clean outline of the fish with as much detail as possible in the scales, fins and tail. She then details the prints taking care to replicate the fish’s unique markings. The result is a hybrid of a traditional Japanese gyotaku print and a realistic, artistic rendering of the fish.
Texas Fish Prints are exhibited and sold in art galleries, home and decor stores and gift shops as well as outdoor stores and fishing events.
